ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team had four players in double figures, led by sophomore Naz Hillmon with 21 points, in a 79-64 win over Oakland Sunday afternoon (Dec. 8) at Crisler Center.
Hillmon also had nine rebounds and a pair of assists in 32 minutes of action to pace the Wolverines. Senior Kayla Robbins turned in 10 points and four steals, while sophomore Amy Dilk had 10 points, three boards and four assists. Junior Priscilla Smeenge scored 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench, and senior Akienreh Johnson had nine points and seven boards, as 10 Wolverines found the scoring column.
With Michigan facing a 13-9 deficit in the early going, a three-point play from Hillmon ignited a 7-0 run for the home team. Hillmon converted the three-point play and made good on a second-chance bucket on the next trip down the floor before a Robbins steal-and-score forced an Oakland timeout with 3:15 remaining in the first period as Michigan took a 16-13 lead.
U-M held a 22-21 lead after 10 minutes as Oakland made a corner triple as time expired to cut the lead to just one point.
The Wolverines held Oakland to just seven points in the second quarter, taking a 40-28 lead into the half. Michigan used a 12-2 run to close the half, which was capped by a three-point play from freshman Maddie Nolan and layup from Johnson to give U-M the double-figure lead.
Oakland slowly chipped away at Michigan's lead throughout the third quarter, cutting it to four points, 54-50, off a corner three with 2:18 left in the period.
Michigan answered with an 8-0 run, getting six points from Hillmon and a putback layup from Smeenge to take a 62-50 lead into the fourth quarter.
Oakland called timeout with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter after Hillmon found freshman Izabel Varejão on the high-low as Michigan pushed the lead to 68-53. The freshman converted the three-point play after the break for a 69-53 lead.
Smeenge hit back-to-back triples, pushing Michigan's lead to 20 points (75-55) for the first time and forcing another Oakland timeout at the 6:15 mark.
It was all Michigan from there as the Wolverines picked up their fourth straight win.
U-M will be back in action next Saturday (Dec. 14), hosting Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m.
