Michigan Knocks off App State, Picks Up Fifth Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 62-35 win over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 14) at Crisler Center to pick up its fifth straight win.
Senior Akienreh Johnson led the way for the Maize and Blue, turning in the second 20-point game of her career with 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting to go with five boards and two steals. Sophomore Naz Hillmon went for 11 points, four boards and five assists, with sophomore Emily Kiser chipping in 10 points, seven boards and three blocks off the bench.
It was all Michigan from the tip as the Wolverines raced out to 10-0 lead, capped by Johnson's second triple of the frame to force an App State timeout at the 5:33 mark.
U-M held a 19-6 lead after the first 10 minutes as Hillmon followed her own miss at the buzzer to give Michigan the 13-point lead.
Michigan surrendered just seven points in the second quarter while getting six from Kiser in the period en route to a 31-13 lead at the break. Johnson paced the team with 10 at the break.
Michigan used a 6-0 run, with two buckets from Johnson and one from Hillmon, to force another App State timeout at the 6:22 mark of the third quarter as U-M's lead grew to 37-14.
U-M held the Mountaineers to single digits for the third straight quarter in the third, allowing just nine points in the period.
The Wolverines led by as many as 32 points in the final quarter en route to their fifth straight win.
Michigan will close out the non-conference portion of the season next weekend, when they take on Florida State at the Hall of Fame Women's Showcase in Uncasville, Connecticut. The game will start at 1:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the ACC Network.
