Wolverines Unable to Mount Comeback Against Hawkeyes in Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team was unable to come back from an early deficit as it fell, 74-59, to Iowa on Friday night (Feb. 1) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa shot 47.3 percent, which included 42.9 percent from beyond the arc to capture the win. Early foul trouble also plagued the Wolverines, who committed 20 fouls on the night.
Michigan had three players reach double-digit scoring with freshman Ignas Brazdeikis and sophomore Jordan Poole netting 16 points each, while junior Zavier Simpson scored 10. Simpson was three assists and two rebounds shy of his second straight triple-double as he grabbed eight boards and dished out seven assists. Simpson has collected seven assists or more in 10 games this season.
Simpson and junior Jon Teske led Michigan on the boards with eight rebounds each, while Brazdeikis pulled down seven rebounds.
Brazdeikis scored Michigan's first nine points to give the Wolverines a 9-7 lead with 15:16 to go in the first half. After a three-pointer from Brazdeikis gave U-M a 17-12 lead, Iowa went on an 11-0 run over the next 2:27 to take a 23-17 advantage with 8:30 to go in the half.
Poole ended the Wolverine scoring drought when he drove the ball down the left side of the floor and made a jumper from the baseline to bring the score to 25-19 in favor of Iowa. Poole continued to cut into the lead, draining back-to-back three-pointers to bring Michigan within 13 points, 40-27, with under three minutes to play in the opening half.
The Michigan offense was unable to put together a big run in the closing minutes of the first half and trailed, 42-29, heading into the locker room.
Michigan continued to trail by double digits until it used a short 6-0 run to cut the Iowa lead to nine points, 50-41, with 12:28 to go following two Simpson free throws. It did not take long for the Hawkeyes to find its offensive push, going up by 11 points, 62-51, with eight minutes to play in the contest.
The Iowa offense remained hot, making five of its next 7 shots to propel the Hawkeyes to a 67-53 advantage over the Wolverines with just over five minutes remaining. U-M could not bring its deficit back to single digits through the remainder of the game.
The Wolverines will be back in action Tuesday (Feb. 5) when it travels to Piscataway, New Jersey, for a contest against Rutgers. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m,. and the game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
