
Michigan Travels to Notre Dame for Midweek B1G Clash

The University of Michigan ice hockey team (12-11-6, 8-7-4-2 B1G) is set to face No. 15-ranked Notre Dame (14-10-3, 7-8-2-2 B1G) this Tuesday (Feb. 12) in a midweek B1G matchup in South Bend, Indiana.
The Notre Dame Series
Michigan and Notre Dame meet for the 143rd time in program history, with the series dating back to 1923. The Wolverines lead the overall series 79-58-5. The two teams last played each other outdoors at Notre Dame Stadium on Jan. 5. The Wolverines beat the Irish, 4-2, to take a 2-1 series lead this season, with the teams splitting the weekend series Nov. 9-10 at Yost Ice Arena.
Scouting the Irish
The Irish will come into Tuesday's match up ranked No. 15 in the country and coming off a bye weekend. Notre Dame last played Feb. 1-2 in a weekend series in which Ohio State swept the Irish, 4-2 and 2-0.
Senior defenseman Bobby Nardella leads Notre Dame with 26 points (7 goals, 19 assists) this season with a team-high 19 assists. Junior forward Cal Burke (9 G, 12 A) leads the Irish in scoring with nine goals.
Cale Morris continues to be Notre Dame's primary netminder, having played in 23 games this season with a record of 11-9-1. Morris' save percentage sits at .926, and he is allowing 2.35 goals per game.
Notre Dame This Season
The Irish come into the matchup sitting fifth in the B1G standings with 25 points and a conference record of 7-8-2-2. Since playing Michigan on Jan. 5, Notre Dame is 2-4-2 in its last eight games with wins coming against Wisconsin (Jan. 18) and Michigan State (Jan. 25).
Michigan State Recap
The Wolverines faced off against in-state rival Michigan State last week in their fourth and fifth matchups of the season. U-M hosted the Spartans on Friday night (Feb. 8), which saw the Maize and Blue use a big second period to lift them to a 5-3 victory.
The teams took the rivalry to Little Caesars Arena on Saturday night (Feb. 9) for the annual Duel in the D. Michigan scored two goals in the opening period and three in the final period for a 5-2 victory. The weekend sweep of the Spartans marks the first sweep of MSU since the 2015-16 series and Michigan's third straight "Iron D" Trophy.
It was a big points weekend for U-M as 13 different Wolverines tallied points over the two games. Will Lockwood (2 G, 2 A) and Quinn Hughes (4 A) led Michigan with four points each in the two games. Lockwood scored in each game, while Hughes recorded three assists in Saturday's contest.
Goaltenders Hayden Lavigne and Strauss Mann each got a start between the pipes and tallied 20 and 21 saves, respectively.

Sophomore defenseman Quinn Hughes is among the initial nominees for the Hobey Baker Award. The first round consists of fan voting, which will run through March 10. Classmate Josh Norris was among the nominees before suffering a season-ending injury. » Vote
Quinn-tessential Blue-liner
Hughes has tallied 29 points (4 G, 25 A) this season for the fifth-highest point total of any defenseman in the NCAA. He leads all blue-liners in assists and ranks second among all skaters in the country and second in the B1G.
Locked In
Junior forward Will Lockwood has 13 goals on the season, which is the most on the team, while his 25 points (13 goals, 12 assist) are the second most on the team behind Hughes and tied for 14th in the Big Ten. Lockwood has tallied a goal in eight out of his last 10 games.
Slake and Bake
Junior forward Jake Slaker tallied three assists against Michigan State on Friday (Feb. 8). Those assists added to his season points total which now stands at 23 (10 goals, 13 assists) and includes five goals on the power play. He is tied for seventh in the Big Ten in scoring on the man-advantage and contributes to Michigan's 21 power-play goals.
Pasta Time
Sophomore forward Michael Pastujov scored two goals on Friday night (Feb. 8), which marked five goals in a three-game stretch. Pastujov entered the weekend with six goals on the season and extended his goal streak on Friday before it came to an end Saturday (Feb. 9).
Offensive Defensemen
The defensive duo of Quinn Hughes and senior Joseph Cecconi has a combined 46 points, the fourth-highest point total of any defensive pairing in the country behind Quinnipiac's Chase Priskie and Brandon Fortunato (63), Ferris State's Cooper Zech and Nate Kallen (48), and Mercyhurst's Joseph Duszak and Josh McDougall (50).
Winning the Draw
The Wolverines have won 51.0 percent of their draws, going 952-914 in the circle. Junior Nick Pastujov and redshirt sophomore Luke Morgan lead the team with 55.4 percent and 54.6 percent rates, respectively.
Creating Chances
Michigan has taken 1,070 shots on goal, which is the second most in the country behind Penn State (1,111). U-M ranks second behind the Nittany Lions (39.68) with 36.96 shots on goal per game. The Maize and Blue has outshot its opponents by an average of 9.41 shots per game and has taken 273 more shots than it has allowed this season, the fifth-best margin in the country.
