ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team got both a title and a school record from thrower Andrew Liskowitz as the Wolverines finished eighth with 52 points Saturday (Feb. 23) on the final day of the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships – the first held at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Liskowitz broke his own school and facility records in the shot put in front of a sellout crowd of more than 3,500 to claim the title in a competition that came down to the final throws, leading a Michigan effort on Saturday that produced 12 top-eight scoring performance from 11 individuals and a relay team across nine different events.
The 60-meter hurdles final included three scorers in sixth-place Roland Amarteifio, seventh-place Sierra Hendrix-Williams and eighth-place Job Mayhue, while the men's mile produced a pair of scorers in sixth-place Ben Hill and seventh-place Chase Barnett.
Jack Lint was fifth in the heptathlon for the Wolverines, while seventh-place honors were earned by Taylor McLaughlin at 400 meters, Anthony Berry at 800 meters, Daniel Butael in the triple jump and the 4x400 relay. Asani Hampton picked up an eighth-place finish at 60 meters.
They joined Friday's Big Ten champion weight thrower Joe Ellis, the fifth-place distance medley relay, and the 3,000-meter duo of Will Landowne and Jack Aho to round out Michigan's point production on the weekend.
Entering the final three throws in fifth place with a best on the day of only 18.19m (59 feet, 8.25 inches) and three fouls, Liskowitz had some work to do in the back half of the competition. After a third-straight foul on his fourth throw, he came through in the fifth with a new school record of 19.67m (64-6.5) that would ultimately hold up for the win.
Liskowitz finished out with a heave of 19.45m (63-9.75), but then had to wait for four more throwers to make their final attempts before he could be crowned champion. Jalil Brewer of Purdue came closest with a 19.58m (64-3) on his final attempt that looked close to the naked eye, but Liskowitz would not be overtaken.
The throw bettered his previous school record of 19.64m (64-5.25), which also stood as the U-M Track Building record.
The hurdles trio of Amarteifio, Hendrix-Williams and Mayhue combined for six points in their final, as they went 7.95, 7.97 and 21.60, respectively. The first two went sub-8.00 for the third consecutive race, while Mayhue tripped over an early hurdle. Instead of leaving the track in disappointment, Mayhue got up and finished out the race to secure his point for Michigan.
Michigan also picked up points from multiple scorers in the mile, where Hill was sixth in 4:06.12 and Barnett took seventh in 4:07.75. Hill made a strong move on the final lap to move to the front of the chase pack, with Barnett putting in a surge behind him. Barnett held off Indiana's Joseph Murphy by less than a quarter of the second as the pair combined for five points.
Lint accounted for four team points as he mounted a second-day rally to take fifth in the two-day heptathlon with 5,507 points. After starting the day in seventh-place, he kicked of Saturday with a career-best 8.18 in the 60-meter hurdles and followed it with a career-best 4.65m (15-3) in the pole vault. Lint survived a third-attempt make at 4.35m (14-3.25) that, if he had missed, would have dropped his eventual score by nearly 100 points.
McLaughlin added two points to the team effort with a seventh-place finish at 400 meters in 47.21 -- for his fourth consecutive scoring performance in the Big Ten Indoor 400 meter final -- and contributed to two more as he anchored the 4x400 relay to a season's best 3:10.04 for another seventh-place finish. He was preceded in the relay by Desmond Melson, Alex Schwedt and Ian Davis, who gave Michigan the lead entering McLaughlin's leg with a strong kick down the homestretch past Indiana.
Berry scored in his second consecutive Big Ten Indoor Championships with a seventh-place finish at 800 meters in 1:51.67, adding in another two points for Michigan.
Day two's first points came by way of triple jumper Butael, who leapt 15.09m (49-6.25) for another two-point seventh-place finish.
True freshman Asani Hampton capped off a stellar indoor debut campaign with an eighth-place finish in the 60-meter final, clocking 6.85 for an additional Michigan point.
After finishing eighth at 3,000 meters on Friday, Aho just missed scoring another point for the Wolverines as he placed ninth at 5,000 meters.
Only the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Alabama, remain on the Wolverines winter-season schedule. Though entries have not yet been made official, Michigan will be sending national-contending and now-Big Ten Champion throwers Joe Ellis and Andrew Liskowitz to take on the country's best in pursuit of national titles and All-America honors.
