EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team collected the doubles point and five of six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 6-1 win over Michigan State on Wednesday evening (Feb. 27) to kick off Big Ten play.
The duo of freshman Andrew Fenty and sophomore Mattias Siimar cruised to their eighth dual win and 13th overall with a 6-1 victory at the top doubles spot. The first point of the match was clinched when the combination of freshman Patrick Maloney and sophomore Kristofer Siimar claimed No. 3, 6-2.
The Wolverines continued the impressive performance against their in-state rival with winning five out of six first sets in singles play.
Freshman Steven Forman, playing in his second dual match, earned the second point of the night with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
After the Spartans took court five for their lone point of the evening, U-M went on to earn victories on the remaining courts in straight sets.
Fenty continued his hot start in dual play, earning a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2. The victory is his sixth in a row and improves his record to 7-2 in dual matches and 14-4 overall, with his 14 wins being a team high. Classmate Maloney improved to 9-5 on the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Siimar clinched the top singles flight with a 6-3, 6-0 win to improve to 12-7 on the season and 6-2 in dual match play for his sixth win in a row. Junior Connor Johnston finished the mid-week Big Ten opener for the team's final point with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
Michigan will travel to Florida for the spring holiday next week (March 4-8) for training before returning to action March 15-17, when the Wolverines head to Indian Wells, California, for the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge. Their opponent and match times are to be determined.
