INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team saw its seven-match win streak end, falling to Arizona State, 4-2, on day one of the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday afternoon (March 15). Â
Michigan claimed the doubles point to take the first point of the match with wins by duos who were paired for the first time this season. The combination of senior Myles Schalet and freshman Steven Forman earned a 7-5 win at No. 3, while senior Gabe Tishman and sophomore Mattias Siimar clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (6) tiebreak win.
Junior Connor Johnston continued his winning ways in singles, earning his career-high 10th singles win of the season at No. 3. His 6-4, 6-3 victory was one of two straight-sets matches, while the remaining four went three sets.
After ASU cut the Michigan lead in half with a win at No. 4, the Sun Devils claimed victories in the third sets on courts five, two and one to clinch the comeback victory.
Sophomore Harrison Brown was in the third set of his match tied at 5 before it was abandoned.
Michigan will be back in action for day two of the BNP Paribus Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge when it faces Cornell at 8 a.m. PST. The Wolverines defeated the Big Red earlier this season, 4-1, in Ann Arbor on Feb. 1.
