SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a final-round 298 to finish 10th of 12 competing schools in the annual Desert Mountain Intercollegiate at the Outlaw Course. Mississippi State took home the team championship, going wire-to-wire for a three-round total of 859 (-8), including a first-day score of 17 under par for 36 holes.
"Overall I am disappointed that we weren't sharper this weekend," said head coach Chris Whitten. "We've played this course over several years, although we did have some guys in the lineup who were seeing it for the first time.
"Desert golf can be very penalizing if you get in the wrong place, and we saw some of that this week. I was really happy to see Patrick Sullivan end with a great round today, and it is great to have Ben Dunne lead the starting five as a freshman."
For Michigan, fifth-year senior Ian Martin was tied for second in the field on par-3 scoring, logging a 2.92 average (-1) for the weekend. Martin was joined by sophomore Henry Spring among the field leaders in birdies, as the duo finished tied for 14th with 11 apiece.
Playing as an individual, Spring led Michigan with a 22nd-place finish (72-75-75/222), while Dunne led the program's team scorers with a 27th place finish (73-73-77/223).
Senior Nick Carlson's 35 pars were tied for fourth on the weekend.
"We're really proud and fortunate to host this event and to partner with Desert Mountain," Whitten said. "It's become a great tradition for our program, and we receive tremendous support from everyone here."
With the spring break trip completed, the Maize and Blue will return to Ann Arbor for a few weeks before heading to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at the Finley Golf Course.
