CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team set a Big Ten Tournament record, winning its ninth straight tournament game with a 74-53 victory over Iowa on Friday (March 16) in a quarterfinal game at United Center.
In their first game since March 9, the Wolverines shot 45 percent from the floor (28-of-62) and made 10 three-pointers in their victory, while keeping Iowa at 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the floor and 1-for-16 (6.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Michigan turned the tables on the Hawkeyes, who held U-M to 32.3 percent shooting (21-of-65) while shooting 45.6 percent (26-for-57) in a 74-59 win over U-M on Feb. 1.
Junior Zavier Simpson went for his fourth career double-double, scoring 10 points and 11 assists. It was Simpson's sixth game in which he has had at least 10 helpers. Junior Jon Teske also recorded a double-double for Michigan, the eighth of his career, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two blocks. In all, five Wolverines reached double-digit points as Ignas Brazdeikis scored a team-best 15 points, Isaiah Livers added 13 and Jordan Poole had 11.
Simpson was 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range, while Eli Brooks, Brazdeikis and Poole each hit two from long range. Defensively, Brooks, Poole and Simpson had two steals each and Teske added two blocks.
Michigan used an 8-0 run that included five points from Poole to take an early 12-6 lead over Iowa before the Hawkeyes put the Wolverines into a slight scoring lull to come within two, 17-15, with 11:48 remaining in the first half.
Both teams suffered a slowdown in their offensive production, but U-M took control of the final minutes of the first half, using three three-pointers from three different players to take a 13-point lead, 40-27, into the locker room at halftime.
The Wolverines hit seven three-pointers in the opening half, while Simpson dished out eight assists over the first 20 minutes of play. Livers led all Michigan scorers with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting and both Simpson and Teske added eight points to the U-M offense.
Michigan opened the second half on a 15-2 run before Simpson notched his fourth career double-double with a fast break layup and his 10th assist of the game to put the Wolverines up 59-35 with 13:44 to play.
Up by 23 points, Charles Matthews stole the ball and sent the ball up to Poole, who finished with a dunk to extend the Wolverine lead to 69-44 with under eight minutes left in the second half.
The No. 3 seed Wolverines will be back in action Saturday (March 16), when they take on No. 7 seed Minnesota in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CDT, and the game will be broadcast on CBS.
