INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team got back to its winning ways with a 4-3 victory over Cornell on Saturday's (March 16) second day of the BNP Paribus Open Collegiate Challenge at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The Wolverines continued their impressive play in doubles to take the first point of the match with wins from the duo of freshman Andrew Fenty and sophomore Mattias Siimar at No. 1 (6-2), and a 6-4 win from the combination of freshman Patrick Maloney and senior Myles Schalet at No. 3.
Cornell earned straight-sets wins in singles play on courts one and five to take a 2-1 lead, before U-M evened the score at 2 with a win at No. 6. Senior Gabe Tishman earned his 10th victory of the season with a straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1 win.
The Big Red would regain the lead with a win at four before Michigan claimed the match with wins in the third sets by Schalet and Fenty at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Schalet battled back from losing the first set, 3-6, to take sets two and three, 6-4 and 6-3. Fenty clinched the match for the Maize and Blue with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 2, his team-leading 15th victory of the season and seventh in a row.
Michigan will conclude play at the BNP Paribus Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge on Sunday (March 17) against Purdue at Noon PDT.
