INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded its weekend at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge, defeating Cornell by a score of 4-0, Sunday afternoon (March 17). Â Â
The Wolverines earned the first point of the match after two wins in doubles play. The pairing of junior Connor Johnston and senior Gabe Tishman earned a 6-1 win at No. 2, while the duo of freshman Patrick Maloney and senior Myles Schalet also cruised to a 6-1 triumph in the third pairing.
Michigan continued its strong play in singles, where freshman Andrew Fenty continued his impressive play at the No. 3 spot, earning a 6-4, 6-4 decision for his team-leading 16th win of the season and a team-high eighth win in a row.
Tishman would give U-M its third point of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court six, earning his second win in as many days and 11th on the campaign. No. 37-ranked sophomore Mattias Siimar clinched the match for the Maize and Blue with a straight-sets win at No. 1, 7-5, 7-5, claiming his 13th win of the season.
Michigan was in the third set on the remaining three courts before the matches were abandoned after the match-clinching point.
The Wolverines will return to conference play next weekend, when they travel to Penn State for a Friday (March 22) matchup at 5 p.m. in State College, Pennsylvania.
