MIAMI, Fla. -- Though this weekend may have been the outdoor season-opener for the University of Michigan men's track and field team, many of its top sprinters and hurdlers showed they are already in mid-season form at the Miami Hurricane Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 15-16).
The small contingent of Wolverine sprinters and hurdlers, as well as a pair of multi-event athletes, combined to record five top-five finishes and five new career-best performances at Miami's Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Florida, to kick off the 2019 spring season.
Making his Michigan outdoor debut less than an hour away from his hometown of Davie, true freshman Ian Davis had the top finish of the day as he was the runner-up for 400 meters. He was joined as a top-five finisher by a pair of third-place hurdlers in fellow true freshman Job Mayhue at the 110-meter distance and Noah Caudy at the 400-meter distance.
Michigan was also third in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Davis clocked 47.55 for 400 meters out of what was supposed to be the second-fastest section of the event, though the race ultimately producing the day's two fastest times. He was just .26 of a second from claiming the win.
Just over a second behind him in the standings was ninth-place teammate Vail Hartman, whose career-best 48.63 marked a triumphant return from a 2019 indoor season lost to injury.
Both Mayhue and Caudy posted top-10 finishes in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles on the day.
Mayhue led three Wolverines in the top-10 in the shorter event with a slightly wind-aided 14.42 (+2.2m/s) for third place, followed by eighth-place Sierra Hendrix-Williams in 14.67 (+2.2m/s) and 10th-place Caudy in 14.87 (+0.0m/s).
Mayhue's run, the first of his outdoor career at Michigan, was good for the No. 20 position on Michigan's all-time, all-conditions performers list. That list takes into account all performances, including those that exceed the internationally recognized +2.0m/s limit for allowable wind.
It was Caudy who took center stage in the 400-meter hurdles as he clocked 53.31 for third with Mayhue ninth in 54.39.
Perhaps more than in any other event, the Wolverines showed the biggest sign of improvement at 100 meters, where each of the team's three fastest runners achieved new personal-best times.
Running into a slight headwind, Desmond Nicholas shaved .01 off his career best to run 10.63 (-0.3m/s) for seventh overall. Joe McCarthy slashed a third of a second off his old career best with a 10.75 (1.6m/s) clocking for 12th, while Stephen Hagen chopped two-tenths of a second off his personal record in a 10.78 (+0.7m/s) run for 14th.
McCarthy would come back for another personal record later in the day, tying his existing mark of 21.74 (+0.7m/s) for 200 meters in a 10th-place finish.
More event groups and student-athletes will make their 2019 outdoor debuts next weekend as the Wolverines travel to Vanderbilt for the Black and Gold Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday and Saturday (March 22-23).
