MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off its 2019 outdoor season on Saturday (March 16) as a select group of sprinters, hurdlers and multi-event athletes posted top finishes and career-best performances at the Miami Hurricane Invitational.
The Wolverines combined for five top-10 finishes and three career-best efforts -- not counting several women making their outdoor collegiate debuts -- across seven events over the course of Saturday afternoon.
The two highest finishers of the day for the Wolverines came in the hurdles events as Jenna Reid had a collegiate career-best day for fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and true freshman Sydney McGinley took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in what amounted to a homecoming meet for the Weston, Florida, native.
Joining them as top-10 finishers on the day were seventh-place Julia Hall at 400 meters and ninth-place Akili Echols at 100 meters.
Reid chopped nearly a full second off her career-best time in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking 1:01.75 for fifth overall.
McGinley, back in her home state, had arguably the best race of her young Michigan career in a sixth-place finish in 14.57 (+2.0m/s), with heptathlete Theresa Mayanja also breaking 15 seconds in 14.98 (+0.4m/s) for 11th.
Hall shaved .02 off of her outdoor career best for 400 meters as she clocked 56.23 for seventh place in the event. She also doubled back later as Michigan's top finisher at 200 meters in 14th with a time of 25.03 (+1.2m/s).
In the shortest race of the day, Akili Echols came within a tenth of a second of her career best at 100 meters as she went 12.22 (+1.5m/s) for ninth.
More event groups and student-athletes will make their 2019 outdoor debuts next weekend as the Wolverines travel to Vanderbilt for the Black and Gold Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday and Saturday (March 22-23).
