ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan baseball team recorded 12 hits and scored 10 unanswered runs in the middle innings en route to a 12-5 win over Western Michigan on Tuesday (March 19) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan jumped on board with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Wolverines loaded the bases via three walks before senior Blake Nelson hit a shot to the third baseman, could not come up with the ball, and the play was scored an RBI error that plated two runs.
WMU took the lead in the top of the third, chasing U-M sophomore starter Blake Beers. All told, WMU scored three times on the benefit of two walks, a hit batsman, two singles and a double before freshman left-hander Walker Cleveland shut down the rally with a strikeout and groundout.
The Wolverines loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third and Nelson plated two runs with a sharp single through the left side. WMU went to the bullpen for the second time and lefty Matt McConnell got three strikeouts around an infield single to get out of further trouble.
Junior Jordan Brewer gave U-M a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning when he turned on an 0-1 fastball and drove a long home run over the left-field wall to score sophomore Jesse Franklin, who doubled ahead of Brewer. U-M added another run on an RBI groundout by sophomore Jack Blomgren.
Cleveland settled things on the mound for U-M as he held WMU at bay over his 4.2 innings of work, during which he allowed just one hit while striking out two over 57 pitches to earn his first collegiate victory. Â
The Wolverines added five runs in the sixth to take control of the game. Kerr, Blomgren, junior Christan Bullock, redshirt sophomore Harrison Salter and sophomore Jordan Nwogu all collected RBI hits in the frame to give the home side a 12-3 lead.Â
Brewer, Nelson, Blomgren and Bullock led Michigan"s attack with two hits apiece. Nelson drove in three runs.
Michigan will return to action on Thursday (March 21) at 6:30 p.m. CDT in Lubbock, Texas, where the Wolverines will begin a three-game series at No. 19 Texas Tech. The Wolverines will finish the swing with a neutral-site game against Stetson on Saturday (March 23) at 6:30 p.m. CDT in Lubbock.
