ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan softball team earned its seventh shutout of the 2019 season, blanking Western Michigan, 3-0, on Tuesday (March 19) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Sophomore left-hander Meghan Beaubien tossed a complete-game, striking out 13 while allowing just four hits to improve to 9-3 in the circle.
Six different Wolverines tallied a hit against WMU with freshman Lexie Blair, senior Faith Canfield and junior Abby Skvarce each driving in one run.
Beaubien and the Michigan defense set the Broncos down in order in the top of the first and Canfield put the Wolverines on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning as she launched a home run over the left-center field wall to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines retired the first six batters of the contest and Beaubien struck out all three batters in the top of the fourth to maintain the 1-0 U-M advantage.
With a runner on second base and two outs in the fifth inning, Skvarce came in to pinch-hit and laced a single through the left side of the infield, which sent sophomore Natalia Rodriguez -- who singled and stole second -- to score and extend the Wolverine lead to 2-0. Skvarce took second on the throw to the plate on her single and scored when Blair singled to the right side to push the U-M advantage to 3-0.
Western Michigan put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but Beaubien again responded as she worked the count to 2-2 before throwing a changeup for a called third strike to end the game.
Michigan will open Big Ten Conference play this weekend at the Wilpon Complex with a three-game series against the Nebraska Cornhuskers starting Friday (March 22) with a 4 p.m. contest. The Wolverines and Cornhuskers will then meet Saturday (March 23) at 2 p.m. and will close out the series Sunday (March 24) at 1 p.m. [ Tickets ]
