LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team captured a share of the first Big Ten regular-season title in conference history despite a 408.700-403.800 loss against Nebraska on Saturday (March 23) at Devaney Center.
Michigan (8-4, 4-2Â Big Ten) took a share of the title despite the defeat, as Iowa -- which entered the day tied with the Wolverines -- was defeated by Minnesota in a tri-meet in Minneapolis. Michigan, Iowa and Minnesota finished the conference schedule with identical 4-2 Big Ten marks.
U-M began the afternoon on pommel horse, scoring 62.450 as a team on the apparatus. Sophomore Cameron Bock led the Wolverines with a 14.00 routine, earning an event title.
Nebraska (8-6, 2-4 Big Ten) was on floor exercise to start and the Cornhuskers posted a 68.600. In the second rotation, the Wolverines posted a 69.450 on floor, while the Huskers scored a 66.150 on pommel horse. With the third rotation came Michigan's first and only lead of the day at 203.750-202.750, which was quickly erased in the fourth rotation by Nebraska, which never trailed again. The Huskers ended the day with a season-best team score, surpassing their old season high by more than four full points.
Senior Ryan Dunning ended the afternoon as the event winner on still rings, scoring 14.10, with sophomore James Read coming in third after posting a 13.95. Senior Justin Hopgood was the other Wolverine to bring home an event title after his 13.900 high bar routine.
