PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team put up 14 runs and 26 hits to claim its series-ending doubleheader against Rutgers, 7-0 and 7-4, on Saturday afternoon (March 30) at the Rutgers Softball Complex. It was the third straight series sweep for the Wolverines, who pushed their win streak to 11 games in a row.
Michigan, which posted 13 hits in each game, has tallied double-digit hits in four of its last five games. Senior first baseman Alex Sobczak knocked out homers in each game -- and in all three games of the road series -- to highlight her 4-for-7, six-RBI day. Senior second baseman Faith Canfield and senior center fielder Natalie Peters also posted four hits apiece; Canfield tallied three base hits in the first game today, while Peters posted three in the nightcap.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien (13-3) registered a win and a save from the circle, striking out four while allowing no runs on four hits through 6.2 relief innings in the day's first slate and adding another strikeout through a hitless seventh inning in the second. Freshman right-hander Alex Storako (9-6) secured the win in game two, allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
The Wolverines took advantage of quick starts in both contests. Canfield scored the day's first run on a throwing error after a double-steal threat induced a wild throw from the Scarlet Knight catcher. Sobczak followed with a looped RBI single into shallow right field.
Canfield used an RBI single to drive in a run in the fourth before Michigan broke it open with a four spot in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Sobczak's two-run blast down the left-field line.
Michigan picked up where it left off with four runs scored in the first inning of the second slate. Sobczak drove in the first tally with an RBI single through the left side. Senior designated player Mackenzie Nemitz used a bases-loaded fielder's choice to tack on another before junior third baseman Madison Uden pinballed a first-pitch single through the 5-6 hole to push across two more. Nemitz added a second RBI on a single to left field in her next turn at the plate in the second.
Rutgers knocked out a three-run homer with two outs in the third -- its first runs of the day -- but Sobczak got two back in the next frame, connecting with an 0-2 pitch and lining it deep over the left-center field wall. Sobczak now owns a career- and team-best six homers on the season.
Michigan (23-10, 6-0 Big Ten) will return home for a midweek MACtion slate on Wednesday (April 3) when it hosts Toledo at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
