ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The third-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team suffered a narrow 408.250-408.000 defeat at the hands of No. 10 Iowa Saturday (March 9) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
As a team, Michigan (6-3, 2-1 B1G) won floor exercise (69.80), still rings (69.85), vault (69.40) and high bar (68.70). Individually, sophomore Jacob Moore won floor exercise and the all-around, junior Mack Lasker won pommel horse, sophomore Anthony Tawfik earned his first win on high bar, and sophomore Cameron Bock took top honors on both still rings and parallel bars.
U-M was able to grab an early lead, thanks to a strong performance on the floor that included two season highs for the Wolverines. Junior Parker Chiapuzio, competing in his first meet of the season, posted a 14.250, while Moore secured a school-record 15.30. Moore's mark also tied the top score in the NCAA on the exercise all season.
The second rotation went Iowa's way, as the Hawkeyes took a 135.800-135.350 lead into the third rotation. Thanks to a 1-2 finish by Bock (14.50) and redshirt senior Marty Strech (14.35), Michigan resecured the lead (205.200-205.100) heading into the fourth rotation.
In the fourth, Michigan extended its lead to 274.600-273.300, but Iowa made up the difference and then some in the fifth, outpacing the Wolverines in the rotation, 67.30-64.70, with Bock scoring a 14.30 on parallel bars for his second event title of the meet. The Hawkeyes headed into the final rotation leading the Wolverines, 340.800-339.300.
Despite a career best and the first event title of Tawfik's career (14.10), U-M was unable to overcome the slight Hawkeye advantage in the final rotation, mustering up a 68.70 on high bar but coming up .250 short.
