ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It was one more memorable meet at Crisler Center for seniors Emma McLean and Olivia Karas as they were honored in front of the second largest crowd in University of Michigan women's gymnastics history after the team posted a 197.425 on Saturday (March 9).
There were 6,852 fans on hand to see the final regular-season home meet for the two seniors. They were not disappointed, as Michigan scored its fifth straight 197.000 or higher this season and tallied its second highest score of the year. They were also able to witness No. 1 Oklahoma scoring a 198.200 for the second highest score in the NCAA this season behind its own 198.325 against Florida.
Karas and McLean exchanged hugs as each finished her floor exercise routine at the end of the meet. It was an event that both have excelled on throughout their collegiate career, and this time out both scored 9.875. Their teammates helped them have a "party on floor" by wearing sunglasses throughout the entire rotation.
Floor was the top event on the day for McLean, who also competed on vault with a 9.825. Karas had two big routines on uneven bars and balance beam, tying for second on bars with a 9.925 and tying for sixth on beam with a 9.900. Her all-around score was a 39.525 for the meet.
Michigan had a terrific beam rotation with a season-high 49.500 for the third highest beam score in school history. Freshman Natalie Wojcik tied for the win on the event with a 9.950 to match her career best and earn her ninth win in 10 meets this season on beam. She was one of four U-M gymnasts to score 9.900 or higher, as Karas, sophomore Lauren Farley and junior Lexi Funk all scored 9.900.
Funk ended up with her best meet of the season as she also tied a career high with a 9.900 on floor. It was her top meet of the year on floor and her third 9.900 or better on beam in the last five meets.
Wojcik was outstanding once again. In addition to her floor win, she scored a 9.900 on bars, and her all-around score of 39.650 was good for second best in the meet.
Freshman Abby Heiskell made her collegiate bars debut with a 9.800 in the second spot of the lineup.
The Wolverines will end the regular season next Friday (March 15) when they travel to Columbia, Missouri, for a quad meet against Missouri, Minnesota and Centenary at 7 p.m. CDT.
