ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored three first-inning runs and never looked back as the Wolverines defeated Northwestern, 4-1, Saturday (April 20) in the series opener at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.

Earning his third consecutive start, junior left fielder Dominic Clementi started the scoring with an RBI double to the wall in right-field to kickstart a three-run bottom of the first.

Northwestern got on the board in the sixth inning when Jack Dunn laced an 0-2 pitch down the left-field line for a leadoff double and came home on a groundout and a wet-ball infield single.

Michigan got the run back in the bottom of the frame as redshirt senior right fielder Miles Lewis doubled to the left-field wall to lead off and came all the way around from second on a wild pitch for a 4-1 Wolverine lead.

Junior right-handed starter Karl Kauffmann struck out seven batters against four hits and a walk over seven innings to improve to 6-3 on the season. He gave way in the eighth inning to redshirt junior Benjamin Keizer, who worked an effective inning (one strikeout) while freshman Willie Weiss worked around a hit in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his seventh save.

Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu led Michigan with three hits while Lewis was on base twice.

The Wolverines and Wildcats will conclude their weekend series Sunday (April 20) with a noon doubleheader at Ray Fisher Stadium.
