ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team placed second in the first of two NCAA Regional second-round sessions on Friday (April 5) to advance to the NCAA Regional Final on Saturday (April 6).
The Wolverines were led by senior Olivia Karas and freshman Natalie Wojcik. Karas scored a 9.900 on each of the team's first three events, tying for first on both uneven bars and balance beam. Wojcik had the top all-around score in the session with a 39.550, scoring a 9.925 to lead all competitors on floor exercise and a 9.925 to tie for the top score on vault.
U-M had a strong start on vault, finishing with a season-high 49.425 on the event. Wojcik finished the rotation with the team's top score, while Karas, freshman Abby Brenner and senior Emma McLean were all in the top five of the session with a 9.875 or better.
Michigan only competed five on floor as they locked up a spot in Saturday's final after Wojcik's 9.925. Brenner had a solid 9.850 as well on the event.
The Wolverines hit on all six of their beam routines. All six scored 9.825 or better with Karas leading the way with a 9.900. Both Wojcik and junior Lexi Funk scored a 9.875.
The NCAA Regional Final will feature the Wolverines, No. 2 UCLA, No. 10 Alabama and No. 14 Nebraska. The meet will begin Saturday (April 6) at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live by FloGymnastics. The top two teams in Saturday's Finals meet will advance to the NCAA Championships, April 19-20 in Fort Worth, Texas.
