RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Sophomore Luiz Gustavo Borges of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team has been chosen to represent Brazil at this summer's World University Games, per an announcement from the Brazilian Swimming Federation on Friday (May 10).
Borges earned a spot on the team by virtue of finishing fifth in the 50-meter freestyle (22.21) and 10th in the 100-meter freestyle (49.60) at the Brazil Trophy back in April. He ranks No. 14 in the world this year (by best time) in the 50-meter freestyle and sits just .04 seconds behind the school record of 22.17, set by alum Paul Powers in 2016.
The World University Games will be held July 3-14 in Naples, Italy. Borges is the fourth Michigan swimmer heading to WUGs, joining Team USA's Sierra Schmidt, Gabby DeLoof (2015-18) and Catie DeLoof (2016-19).
