IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Four different men from several different disciplines all scored for the University of Michigan men's track and field team on day two of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 11) as the Wolverines continued to position themselves well for a strong final-day run.
Graduate transfer decathlete Jack Lint and shot putter Andrew Liskowitz both medaled for the Wolverines on the second of three days at the conference championships, while first-time top-eight finishers Lewis Tate and Max Wagner both contributed points to the Michigan scoring effort.
In addition to the 16 points Michigan accumulated Friday, they got eight more from Lint's runner-up finish, six more from Liskowitz's third-place shot put performance, three from a breakthrough sixth-place run for Tate in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and a half-point by way of Wagner's eighth-place tie in the high jump.
All told, Michigan has racked up 33.5 points with nine of 21 events scored so far to check in at sixth entering the final day of competition. Nebraska is the leader with 41.5 points, followed by Indiana (41), Penn State (38), and Purdue and Minnesota (36).
Lint may have finished second overall in the decathlon -- the best finish by a Wolverine since Steven Bastien won in 2017 -- but he was unmatched by anyone else in the field in Saturday's five events. Between the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run, Lint scored 3,657 points, 25 more than even eventual champion Nick Guerrant of Michigan State over those same events.
Starting the day in fifth, he slowly worked his way up through the field. He remained in fifth after opening up the day with a 14.70 (-0.7m/s), and stepped up to fourth after a 39.27m (128 feet, 10 inches) effort in the discus. A career-best 4.70m (15-5) pole vault moved him up into third, and a strong 54.16m (177-8) heave in the javelin put him into second with just the 1,500 remaining. That's where he would stay with a 4:44.56 clocking.
He was joined as a Michigan medalist by Liskowitz, who notched his fourth career top-four conference finish in the shot put.
Despite a best 19.91m (65-4) and two more throws farther than 19.40m, Liskowitz would have to settle for third in a hypercompetitive final. After eventual champion Jalili Brewer of Purdue took an early lead at 20.25m (66-5.25), Liskowitz eventually closed the gap with his best of the day on his third attempt.
He would ultimately also be passed by Jonathan Tharaldsen of Minnesota in the fifth round. With one attempt left to overtake Tharaldsen and/or Brewer, he fouled on his sixth-and-final attempt.
While Lint and Liskowitz are well-established conference championships competitors, Michigan's other points of the day came from a less experienced source as Tate took sixth in the steeplechase final and Wagner tied for eighth in the high jump.
Running in just the third 3,000-meter steeplechase race of his life, Tate clocked a career-best 9:00.16 for sixth overall. Tate ran with the lead pack early and stayed put there throughout much of the race, never falling below sixth.
He was nearly joined on the eight-man scoring podium by teammate Joost Plaetinck, who took ninth in 9:09.81.
Wagner also had a career-best day as he cleared 2.11m (6-11) on a third and final attempt to put himself in the running for points. His clutch clearance was preceded by first-attempt makes at his first three heights.
The effort was the first point-scoring performance of his career.
Saturday also wrapped qualifying action on the track, with the Wolverines vying for advancement in four different events. Of the 10 chances Michigan student-athletes had to proceed on to final-round competitions on Sunday, the Wolverines were successful in three of them.
Roland Amarteifio notched his second finals appearance of the weekend as he and true freshman Job Mayhue advanced through to the final of the 110-meter hurdles. Mayhue led the way for the Wolverines, clocking 14.20 (-0.4m/s) for the seventh-fastest time of the prelims. Amarteifio, now appearing in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles finals for the second-straight season, went 14.32 (-0.4m/s) to check in eighth.
Teammate Sierra Hendrix-Williams was just outside making the final, finishing ninth in 14.33 (-0.1m/s) as the first man out.
Derrick Simmons was advanced to the 800-meter final as the result of a protest. Battling for the lead in his qualifying heat with runners to both his right and left, Simmons got mixed up with his opponents with just over 200 meters to go and was knocked to the ground.
The officials ruled that should be able to advance to compete in the final after protests were filed post-race.

The final day of the conference meet gets underway Sunday morning at 11 a.m. CDT with Daniel Butael in the triple jump, kicking off a field events slate that also includes the discus throw at 1:30 p.m. CDT.
