ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2 seed University of Michigan baseball team (38-16) will kick off the 2019 Big Ten Conference Tournament on Wednesday (May 22) with an opening-round contest against No. 7 seed Ohio State (31-24) at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
• Michigan and Ohio State faced off earlier this season (April 12-13) in a three-game set at the Buckeyes' Bill Davis Stadium. Michigan won the final game of the weekend after dropping the first two, which marked the Wolverines' first series loss of the season.
• The Wolverines (16-7 Big Ten) finished just a half-game out of first place in the Big Ten Conference standings this season. Indiana (17-7 Big Ten), which defeated Michigan twice during a three-game series in the second-to-last weekend of the regular season (May 10-12), took home the conference crown. Prior to the season, the Wolverines were picked by the Big Ten's coaches to finish second in the league this year.
• Michigan wrapped up the home portion of its season with a 22-4 record when playing inside the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The Wolverines dropped the Friday and Saturday games (May 10-11) of their final home series against Indiana, but ended the weekend with a thrilling 11-inning, 6-5 victory over the Hoosiers on Senior Day (May 12).
• Wednesday's (May 22) game will mark the Wolverines' sixth neutral-site contest of the season. Michigan is 4-1 when playing in neutral venues so far this year, with its lone loss coming at the hands of Oklahoma State at Dodger Stadium during the Wolverines' spring break trip to California (March 10).
• Michigan's offense leads the Big Ten in batting average (.285), walks (265), doubles (117), stolen bases (80) and sacrifice flies (31). The Wolverines also rank in the top three among Big Ten opponents in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, total hits and runs scored.
• Four Wolverines are hitting above .300, including junior Jordan Brewer (.358), sophomore Jordan Nwogu (.348), senior Blake Nelson (.315), and sophomore Jack Blomgren (.314). Brewer leads the Big Ten in batting average, while Nwogu ranks first in on-base percentage (.465). Sophomore Jesse Franklin also leads the conference with 40 walks.
• The Wolverines' 3.40 earned-run average leads the Big Ten and ranks ninth-best in the nation. The pitching staff also has combined for a conference-most seven shutout victories, which ranks tied for fourth most in the country.
• Michigan is receiving votes in the NCBWA and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls. The Wolverines have been ranked or receiving votes in the national polls each week dating back to the preseason rankings.
• A solo home run in the seventh inning of the Wolverines' final regular-season victory at Nebraska on Friday (May 17) allowed sophomore Jack Blomgren to extend his reached-base streak to 33 games. Blomgren ranks third on the team with a .418 on-base percentage.
• With five strikeouts in Friday's (May 17) game at Nebraska, junior lefty Tommy Henry earned his 95th strikeout to surpass Steve Howe (92) in the record book and now ranks tied with Brett Adcock for ninth all-time in a single season. Henry also ranks 10th in program history with 211 career Ks.
• A loss to Indiana on May 10 snapped a 13-game Michigan win streak, which ranked longest in the NCAA at the time. The streak included victories over Ohio State, Bowling Green, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan, as well as series sweeps of Northwestern, Rutgers and Maryland. The Wolverines made history during the 2018 campaign with an impressive 20-game win streak through March and April, which marked the third-longest win streak in program history.
• Sophomore Jesse Franklin knocked his team-leading 12th homer of the season against Michigan State on May 7 with a bomb over the right-field wall in the third inning. With 22 career home runs in just his sophomore season, Franklin ranks tied for 15th all-time at Michigan.
• Junior-college transfer Jordan Brewer's streak of reaching base was snapped at 32 games against Michigan state on May 7, when he did not reach base via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch. The outfielder knocked in a run and scored one when he reached first base on a fielder's choice in both the seventh and eighth innings. Brewer jump-started a new streak the following day (May 8) with three hits in a 10-1 rout of Eastern Michigan.
• With a save at Maryland (May 3), freshman righty Willie Weiss clinched his ninth save of the year and now ranks third all-time for saves in a single season. Set in 2014 by Tampa Bay Rays prospect Jacob Cronenworth and tied in 2017 by Jackson Lamb, Michigan's all-time single-season record for saves is 12.
