WACO, Texas -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team battled back after losing the doubles point to earn four singles victories en route to a 4-2 win over No. 39-ranked Dartmouth in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament on Friday evening (May 3). With the victory the Wolverines advance to the round of 32 and will play either No. 6-ranked Baylor on Saturday night (May 4) at 6 p.m. CDT. The Bears defeated No. 42 Utah, 4-0, on Friday night.
Michigan dropped the doubles point for just the 10th time this season, falling in an early hole and unable to climb back. At No. 1, junior Connor Johnston and sophomore Mattias Siimar were trailing, 5-0, before battling back to make it 5-3, but could not earn their second break and fell, 6-3. The duo of sophomore Harrison Brown and senior Gabe Tishman held serve to cut their deficit to 5-4 after holding serve, but the Big Green held on for a 6-4 win to clinch the first point of the match.
The Wolverines deficit did not last long in singles as Siimar cruised to a straight-sets win at No. 3. The turning point in the first set came at 3-all, where the Estonia native broke serve then proceeded to win the remaining two games. In the second set, Siimar lost just one game at five-love before winning the set, 6-1.
Dartmouth earned a win at No. 4 before freshman Patrick Maloney tied the match again with a win at No. 5. Trailing 3-2 in the first set, Maloney battled back to take the set, 7-5. In the second set he was tied at 3-all before winning three straight games for a 6-3 win.
Senior Myles Schalet started off his opening set strong with two breaks to take a 4-0 lead. The Big Green took two games before the captain put it away for a 6-2 first-set win. Schalet fell in the second set, 3-6, before a third-set win. In the final set, Schalet cruised to a 5-0 start, dropping two games before clinching the set and match at 6-3.
Tishman found trouble in the early going, falling down, 4-1, in the first set. He was able to make it close before ultimately dropping the set, 6-4. The senior co-captain found his stride in the second set with a 6-2 win and then 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the match for Michigan.Â
Freshman Andrew Fenty was up, 5-3, at No. 1 in the third set before the match was abandoned after the clinching point.
Michigan will take on Baylor on Saturday (May 4) at 6 p.m. CDT. The winner of that match will punch their ticket to the Round of 16 -- which would mark U-M's second consecutive trip and 12th since 1977.
