WACO, Texas -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team's 2018-19 season came to a close with a 4-1 defeat to No. 6-ranked Baylor on Saturday evening (May 4) in the NCAA second round. U-M clinched the doubles point but did not earn a point in singles play, dropping four matches.
Michigan earned its 17th doubles point of the season with three tightly contested doubles matches. After dropping the first match at No. 1, U-M earned two tiebreak wins on the remaining courts to hand Baylor only its seventh doubles loss of the season.
Junior Connor Johnston and sophomore Mattias Siimar had an early 2-0 lead at the top court with an early break in the second game. However, the No. 1-ranked duo in the country of Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah of Baylor took six of eight games for a 6-4 win.
Sophomore Harrison Brown and senior Gabe Tishman held serve on two deuce points and never let the Bears get a lead, ultimately taking the match to a tiebreak that they won, 7-4.
The remaining match came at No. 2, where freshman Andrew Fenty and senior Myles Schalet battled back after 4-3 to hold serve and then broke serve on deuce point to take a 5-4 lead. This match also went into a tiebreaker, which the Wolverines won, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, Baylor took five out of six first sets and won in straight sets at Nos. 4, 1 and 6 within minutes of one another to take a 3-1 lead. U-M's lone first-set win came from Schalet, who won in a 7-4 tiebreaker.
Fenty battled back in the opening set from a 4-1 deficit to cut the score to 4-all, before falling 6-4 to No. 20-ranked Johannes Schretter, who took the second set, 6-3, to hand Fenty only his third loss of the season. Fenty is 27-6 on the season and will participate in the NCAA Individual Championships (May 20-25) in Orlando, Florida.
Baylor clinched the match with a straight-sets win at No. 3. Siimar was down, 4-1, in the opening set before winning consecutive games to make it 4-3. He dropped the set 6-4, then fell in the second set, 6-3, where had jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the early going.
Michigan ends its season with an 18-9 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. It marks the end of the collegiate careers of Schalet and Tishman, who finish their collegiate careers with an overall team mark of 84-30.
