NAPLES, Italy -- Six current or former members of the University of Michigan swimming and diving program competed at the World University Games, held July 4-10 at the Piscina Scandone.
Alum Gabby DeLoof (USA, 2015-18) was among the top swimmers of the entire meet, bringing home five gold medals. She won the 100-meter freestyle (54.76) and 200-meter freestyle (1:57.62), while also helping Team USA win the 4x100-meter freestyle relay (3:37.99), the 4x200-meter freestyle relay (7:53.90) and the 4x100-meter medley relay (3:59.77).
DeLoof is the second consecutive Michigan swimmer to sweep the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events, following alum Siobhán Haughey (Hong Kong), who accomplished the same feat at the 2017 Games in Taipei.
Alum Catie DeLoof (USA, 2016-19) brought home three gold medals -- all on relays. She swam the preliminaries of both the 4x100-meter medley relay and 4x200-meter freestyle relay, and swam alongside her sister in the finals of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
Junior Sierra Schmidt (USA) was a two-time medalist, as she won a gold medal as part of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay (swam in preliminaries) and took bronze in the 400-meter freestyle (4:11.37). It was Schmidt's second appearance for Team USA at the World University Games; she also won a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle in 2017.
Junior Luiz Gustavo Borges (Brazil) won a silver medal as part of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay (3:15.27). He made the final in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing fifth (22.49).
Sophomore Victoria Kwan (Canada) appeared in one event, finishing 13th in the 400-meter IM (4:50.85).
Alum Samantha Yeo (Singapore, 2015-18) was the busiest swimmer in Naples, competing in seven events.
