NEW ORLEANS, La. -- A program-record 11 men from the University of Michigan track and field team were recognized Monday (July 22) for their accomplishments in both athletics and academics with All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Eclipsing the previous program-best eight individual honorees from 2016 and 2017, the men's squad as a whole performed well enough to earn a collective team All-Academic plaudit for the fourth year in a row with a cumulative 3.08 grade-point average under head coaches Jerry Clayton and James Henry.
All-Americans Joe Ellis, Vail Hartman, Jack Lint and Taylor McLaughlin headlined the record-breaking group, which tied Penn and Indiana for the third most honorees of any men's team in the country.
Joining them on the list were Roland Amarteifio, Isaac Harding, Ben Hill, Devin Meyrer, Manning Plater, Lewis Tate and Max Wagner.
McLaughlin earned the award for the third time in his career at Michigan. Lint, who transferred from Virginia prior to the 2019 season, claimed his third such award after winning two as a Cavalier.
The remainder of the group was named All-Academic for the first time in their respective careers.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Ellis, Lint and McLaughlin all earned the award on top of first team All-America honors they garnered during the 2019 season.
Ellis was a two-time first team All-American with a sixth-place finish in the indoor weight throw and an eighth-place showing in the outdoor hammer throw, while Lint and McLaughlin were both fourth in their respective outdoor decathlon and 400-meter hurdle events.
Hartman was a second team All-American as a member of the 14th-place 4x400 relay. Amarteifio was USTFCCCA Honorable Mention in the 400-meter hurdles with his 24th-place finish at nationals.
Meyrer was a fourth-place finisher in the 10,000-meter final at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, where Platter and Tate were sixth in their respective hammer throw and 3,000-meter steeplechase events and Wagner was tied for eighth in the high jump.
Hill was a Big Ten Championships scorer for the Wolverines indoors with a sixth-place finish in the mile.
Nationally, 583 men from 165 different institutions earned the individual award. Michigan was one of 139 programs nationally to earn team All-Academic honors.
