GWANGJU, South Korea -- The University of Michigan swimming and diving program sent nine current or former swimmers to the 2019 FINA World Championships, held July 21-28 at the Nambu University Municipal Aquatics Center.
U-M Women
Rising sophomore Maggie MacNeil (Canada) brought home three medals, including a stunning gold-medal swim in the 100-meter butterfly (55.83). She chased down defending Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom (Sweden) on the back half of the race, setting new Commonwealth, Americas and Canadian records.
MacNeil also won bronze medals on the 4x100-meter freestyle relay (3:31.78) and the 4x100-meter medley relay (3:53.58). In the latter event, MacNeil split 55.56 on the butterfly leg -- the fastest split of the field (and faster than her winning time in the individual 100-meter butterfly from earlier in the week). Canada set a national record in the event.
She also finished 14th in the 50-meter butterfly (26.28) and helped Canada qualify for next summer's Olympics in the 4x100-meter mixed medley relay (fifth, 3:43.06).
Just weeks after winning five gold medals at the World University Games in Italy, alum Gabby DeLoof (USA, U-M 2015-18) suited up one more time, winning a silver medal as part of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. DeLoof swam a leg during the morning's preliminaries (7:51.58).
Alum Siobhán Haughey (Hong Kong, U-M 2016-19) narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the 200-meter freestyle and lowering her previously-held national record (1:54.98). She also finished tied for 10th in the 100-meter freestyle (53.45).
Haughey swam on three relays, helping Hong Kong qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay (11th, 8:04.98). She also swam on the 4x100-meter freestyle relay (10th, 3:40.40) and on the 4x100-meter medley relay (14th, 4:03.52).
