KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Four gymnasts with ties to the University of Michigan men's gymnastics program competed at the 2019 U.S. Championships, Thursday through Saturday (Aug 8-11) at the Sprint Center. The event was highlighted by alum Sam Mikulak (2011-14) winning the sixth all-around title of his legendary career.
His sixth all-around U.S Championships all-around crown snapped a modern-era tie of five with Blaine Wilson, and Mikulak is now now knotted with Makoto Sakamoto, who in 1970 earned his sixth U.S. all-around win.
In the senior all-around, Mikulak hit all 12 of his routines en route to a 174.150 two-day total. In addition, he won the event titles for floor exercise (29.300), pommel horse (29.150), parallel bars (30.650) and horizontal bar (28.700).
Another Wolverine alum in Adrian de los Angeles (2012-15) earned a top-10 finish in the all-around as he placed ninth with a 161.600, while incoming freshman Paul Juda compiled a 159.850 to place 13th, while rising junior Jacob Moore finished 15th with a mark of 155.200.
Juda's success was enough to be named to the 11-man U.S. Junior National Team, while Mikulak secured his spot on the eight-man World Championship team and was named the USA Gymnastics Sportsperson of the Year following the competition.
The top scores for the three U-M gymnasts outside of Mikulak were Juda (26.900) and de los Angeles (26.700) who placed third and fourth, respectively, on parallel bars. De los Angeles added another pair of fourth-place finishes with a 28.950 on parallel bars and a 26.700 on high bar. Moore's top score came on floor exercise, where he tied for ninth with a 27.800.
