LINZ OTTENSHEIM, Austria -- Senior Tayla-May Bentley and sophomore Jessica Schoonbee of the University of Michigan rowing team concluded their time at the Senior World Championships on Saturday (Aug 31) with a fourth-place finish in the women's pair (W2-) C Final in a time of 7:19.860. With four races over six days against the world's best, it was another week of valuable experience and fast racing for the South African duo.
Racing out of lane one next to the Polish boat, Bentley and Schoonbee opened with a 1:47.55 split to sit fourth at the quarter mark, with Ukraine out front. Besides a back-and-forth race between the second-place Polish boat and third-place German boat, the top four finishers remained in that order throughout the race. The South Africans had the fastest second 500-meter segment of the race, but could not maintain the ground they gained. The pair crossed 4.07 seconds behind the Germans, and 2.09 seconds ahead of the Danish.
Bentley and Schoonbee competed together earlier this summer at the U-23 World Championships where they collected a silver medal in this same event. The U-M teammates helped the 1V8 boat win Big Ten gold and place third in the nation this year.
U-M's representation at worlds continues on Sunday (Sept. 1) with Felice Mueller and the U.S. women's eight baot (8+) going for gold.
