Men's Swimming & Diving Wraps Summer at Phillips 66 Nationals

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Thirteen members of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team ended the summer season at the Phillips 66 National Championships at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center last week (July 31-Aug. 4).
The highlights from the five-day meet include:
• Senior Miles Smachlo won a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly (1:55.94). He also earned a second swim in the 100-meter butterfly, winning the consolation final and placing ninth overall (51.93).
• Sophomore Patrick Callan made two event finals, finishing fifth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:47.36) and 400-meter freestyle (3:50.46). He came within .11 seconds of breaking the school record in the 200-meter freestyle, held by Olympian Peter Vanderkaay (1:47.25, 2005).
• Other "A" finalists included senior Tommy Cope in the 200-meter IM (seventh, 2:00.40) and sophomore Luiz Gustavo Borges in the 50-meter freestyle (seventh, 22.46).
• Two incoming freshmen were present at the meet. River Wright (Attleboro, Massachusetts) swam four events, finishing as high as 28th in the 100-meter butterfly. Cam Peel (Spring Lake, Michigan) was 29th in the 50-meter freestyle.
