
Wolverines to Open 2019-20 Season With Miami, Navy

» The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team will open the 2019-20 season with a two-day meet against Navy and Miami University on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 20-21) at Canham Natatorium.
» Friday will feature a standard dual-meet schedule of events in a 25-yard pool, while Saturday will transition to a 50-meter long-course pool with relays and sprint events. Admission is free both days.

2018-19 Review
The Wolverines finished second at the Big Ten Championships, but rallied to take third as a team at the NCAA Championships -- the program's second consecutive top-four finish and second-highest finish in history. Summer Highlights
• World University Games (July 4-10 | Naples, Italy): Junior Sierra Schmidt (USA) won a gold medal on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle (4:11.37). Sophomore Victoria Kwan (Canada) also competed and finished 13th in the 400-meter IM (4:50.85). Among alums, sisters Gabby DeLoof (2015-18) won five gold medals, while Catie DeLoof (2016-19) won three gold medals.
• FINA World Championships (July 21-28 | Gwangju, South Korea): Sophomore Maggie MacNeil (Canada) made headlines with a gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly (55.83), dethroning reigning Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom. She set new Commonwealth, Americas and Canadian records and vaulted to the No. 2 performer in history. Freshman Mariella Venter (South Africa) and junior Alexis Margett (Bolivia) also competed. Among alums, Gabby DeLoof won a silver medal on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, while Siobhán Haughey (Hong Kong, 2016-19) finished fourth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:54.98).
• Phillips 66 National Championships (July 31-Aug. 4 | Palo Alto, Calif.): Schmidt won three medals: silver in the 800-meter freestyle (8:27.13) and bronze medals in the 400-meter freestyle (4:07.79) and 1,500-meter freestyle (16:10.12). She set program long-course records in all three events. Senior Miranda Tucker won bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:07.33) and was fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:26.50), while senior Chloe Hicks finished sixth in the 200-meter backstroke (2:11.93) and 11th in the 200-meter freestyle (1:59.61) on the same day.
• Pan American Games (Aug. 6-10 | Lima, Peru): Alum Ali DeLoof (2013-16, USA) won a gold medal on the 4x100-meter mixed freestyle relay.
• Schmidt and Gabby DeLoof were named to the 2019-20 U.S. National Team on Sept. 4. Heading into an Olympic year, the Wolverines have 23 men's and women's swimmers already qualified for next summer's U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.
Opponent Preview
Miami University finished fourth at the 2019 MAC Championships and broke eight school records. Five RedHawks earned first or second team All-MAC honors.
Series: U-M is 2-0-0 against Miami. The two teams met last season in Ann Arbor, with U-M winning 248-52.
Navy won the Patriot League title last year, the program's eighth consecutive team championship. The Mids sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships last season in swimmers Martina Thomas and Lauren Barber, and divers Meghan Gerdes and Hannah Montau.
Series: This will be the first dual meet between the two programs.
