ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won 15 of 16 events as the Wolverines powered past Miami University, 253-45, and Navy, 225-75, in its season opener on Friday (Sept. 20) at Canham Natatorium.
Just three weeks into training, the upperclassmen led the way. Senior Tommy Cope took both breaststroke events, hitting an NCAA 'B' time in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.09) and winning by nearly four seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.39). Senior Miles Smachlo, fresh off a summer that saw him make the U.S. National Team, did the same in the butterfly events, with wins in the 100-yard butterfly (47.59) and 200-yard butterfly (1:46.59).
Fresh off a medal-winning summer for Mexico at the Pan American Games, junior Ricardo Vargas claimed the distance events, winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:25.13) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:04.80). Classmate Will Roberts, whose father, Bill, is the head coach at Navy, was second in both events behind Vargas.
Freshman River Wright showed versatility and speed in his Canham Natatorium debut, taking first in the 200-yard IM (1:51.83), and finishing second to Smachlo in both the 100-yard butterfly (49.01) and 200-yard butterfly (1:50.30).
Other event winners included sophomore Patrick Callan in the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.89), freshman Cam Peel in the 50-yard freestyle (20.48), junior Luiz Gustavo Borges in the 100-yard freestyle (44.61) and sophomore Jared Daigle in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.05).
In the diving well, junior Ross Todd finished first on one-meter (369.75) and three-meter (401.15), and senior Jake Herremans came from behind in second both times.
The Wolverines also dominated both relays, going 1-2-3 in the 200-yard medley relay and 1-2 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of sophomore Eric Storms, sophomore Will Chan, Smachlo and Borges won the 200-yard medley relay (1:28.07), while Smachlo, freshman Andrew Trepanier, senior Felix Auböck and Borges claimed the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:58.60). Of note, both Borges (19.63) and Peel (19.85) recorded sub-20 splits on their respective anchor legs on the 200-yard medley relay.
The Wolverines will continue their meet with Miami and Navy on Saturday morning (Sept. 21) at 10 a.m. inside Canham Natatorium. The meet will feature relays and short sprints in a 50-meter (long course) pool, as well as a platform diving exhibition. Admission is free.
