MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan football team dropped a 35-14 decision to No. 13-ranked Wisconsin at Camp Randall on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 21). The Badgers scored four rushing touchdowns in the first half in the victory.
Wisconsin (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) jumped on top, 7-0, as the Badgers drove 75 yards on 12 plays on its opening possession. Jonathan Taylor capped the drive with a one-yard scoring rush to cap an eight-carry, 51-yard personal ledger.
With three minutes to go in the first quarter, Taylor sprang free for a 72-yard scoring run to give the home team a 14-0 lead. Taylor had 143 yards midway through the second quarter before he left the game. The Badgers marched on and converted a pair of fourth downs, including on a fourth-and-goal QB sneak by Jack Coan from inside the one-yard line, to take a 21-0 lead with 6:30 to play in the first half.
The first half ended on another Wisconsin rushing touchdown from Coal, this time a 25-yard scamper out of the pocket into the end zone with 57 seconds remaining to give the home team a 28-0 advantage.
The Badgers started the second half in a similar fashion as a two-yard John Chenal touchdown plunge capped a 13-play, 84-yard drive that took 8:02 off the clock for the fifth rushing score of the day.
Michigan (2-1, 0-1 Big Ten) got on the board with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter when Shea Patterson patiently waited out the Wisconsin pass defense before he rolled to the flat and hit Sean McKeon in the back corner of the end zone. McKeon made a nifty toe-tap along the sideline and Patterson added a two-point conversion on a slant pass to Tarik Black to make the score 35-8.
Michigan scored again midway through the fourth quarter as Patterson again targeted his speedy wideouts. The Wolverines moved the ball 67 yards on four plays inside Wisconsin's five-yard line before Patterson scrambled and found Donovan Peoples-Jones in the back of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was no good, and Michigan trailed, 35-14.
Michigan recovered its ensuing onside kick and Patterson again drove the Wolverines deep into Wisconsin territory before a fumble ended the opportunity and gave the ball back to Wisconsin at its own 16 yard line. It was the second lost fumble of the day for Michigan -- both inside the red zone.
After he returned in the second half, Taylor finished with 203 yards on 23 carries as part of a 357-yard rushing attack for the Badgers.
Khaleke Hudson led the U-M defense with 14 tackles (seven solo, one sack) while Brad Hawkins also had double-digit tackles with 10 (five solo).
The Wolverines will host Rutgers next Saturday (Sept. 28) at Michigan Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
