Wolverines Roll to Four-Set Win Over Notre Dame

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Paige Jones and senior Sydney Wetterstrom recorded double-doubles to help power the University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 25-16) over Notre Dame on Sunday (Sept. 22) at Crisler Center.
The non-conference win improved the Wolverines' overall record to 7-3 on the season.
Michigan was led by the double-doubles from Jones (15 kills, 12 digs) and Wetterstrom (11 kills, 16 digs). Freshman May Pertofsky added 11 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, junior Natalie Smith chipped in 13 digs to go with six blocks from fifth-year senior Cori Crocker.
The Wolverines earned a 25-23, first-set victory propelled by a solid performance on the attacking end. Michigan registered a .316 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set victory.
After its win in the first set, Michigan put itself on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-15 victory in set two. The Wolverines grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that featured three lead changes before the Wolverines took over the lead for good. The Michigan offense also got a boost from three service aces.
Michigan saw its attempt at a sweep end when Notre Dame took the third set, 25-20. The Fighting Irish took the lead at 6-5 in a set that was tied five times.
U-M responded to end the match with a 25-16, fourth-set victory. The Wolverines got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Notre Dame attacks in the stanza and capitalized on 10 Fighting Irish attacking errors on the way to victory.
Michigan will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when it will take on Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey, at 7 p.m. The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center on Sunday, Sept. 29, for a showdown with Ohio State at 2 p.m.
