
Wolverines Open Big Ten Play with Sweep at Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Sophomore Paige Jones registered her fourth straight double-double to help propel the University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) over Rutgers on Wednesday (Sept. 25) at College Ave. Gym.
The victory moved the Wolverines' record to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play.
In addition to the standout performance at the net from Jones, who led the team 13 kills and 10 digs, senior Cori Crocker made a season-best six blocks to lead Michigan. Freshman May Pertofsky also collected eight kills in the contest, while senior Sydney Wetterstrom dug out eight balls to help out defensively.
The Wolverines took control of set one at 5-4 and never trailed en route to a 25-14 win. Michigan opened up its largest lead of the stanza, 11 points, to finish off the set. Michigan also supplemented its offense with three aces and got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Rutgers attacks in the stanza.
Michigan won set two, 25-23, to quickly take a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines took the set behind a solid showing on the attacking end. Michigan put together a .394 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set win. The Wolverines rallied from a 10-5 deficit to claim the win.
Michigan completed the sweep with a 25-14 third-set win after it never trailed the Scarlet Knights in the final set. Michigan opened up as much as an 11-point lead at 19-8 before finishing off the set.
Michigan will be back in action on Sunday (Sept. 29), when it will host rival Ohio State at Crisler Center. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
