COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team capped off its three-match road swing with a 2-1 Big Ten victory over Ohio State behind goals from juniors Nicki Hernandez and Sarah Stratigakis on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Wolverines have won four straight matches -- three of them away from home -- for the first time since September 2016, when Michigan five straight.
The junior duo of Hernandez and Stratigakis scored U-M's goals in the second conference match of the season. Hernandez scored her first of the season, and Stratigakis notched her second game-winner.
The Buckeyes scored the first goal of the match when Alia Martin blocked an initial shot that brought her down and the ball took a perfect bounce to Marissa Birzon, who deposited it into the wide-open net to give OSU a 1-0 advantage.
Michigan responded off the kick as Hernandez earned a penalty kick and buried it into the bottom-left of the net to tie the game at 1 in the 25th minute.
Neither team was able to put another goal on the board, and the first half ended in a 1-all deadlock.
Despite controlling the ball for the final 22 minutes of the half, the Wolverines were outshot, 14-7, over the first 45 minutes. Michigan fired three shots on net, while Ohio State took five.
Michigan did not let up offensively in the second half as it earned a free kick from 25 yards out in the 49th minute. Senior Brooke Cilley took the kick and placed the ball into the box where Stratigakis won it and fired a shot into the lower-left of the net. The goal put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1.
The Wolverines had an opportunity for an insurance goal late in the second half when Kierra Krawec tested OSU goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, who came away with the save to keep the match a one-goal affair.
The Wolverines took five shots on net, while Ohio State outshot Michigan, 20-11. The Buckeyes took five shots on goalkeeper Hillary Beall.
Michigan will return to U-M Soccer Stadium for the first time in 19 days when it hosts Purdue on Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. The match against the Boilermakers will be broadcast live on BTN Plus.
