The University of Michigan men's soccer team (1-1) returns to action this weekend when it hosts a pair of matches to close out its four-match homestand at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines will face Cornell (0-0) on Friday (Sept. 6) at 5 p.m. and will follow with a match against No. 13 Washington (2-0) on Sunday (Sept. 8) at 6 p.m. Both matches will be streamed by BTN+ and are part of doubleheaders with the U-M women's soccer team.
Friday's match with Cornell has been designated as a Maize Out. The women's soccer team will face Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. Admission is good for both matches with the purchase of a ticket.
Sunday's match with Washington is the program's second annual Pups at the Pitch match. All Pups at the Pitch participants must purchase a special ticket package that includes a game ticket, dog ticket and a portable water bowl. Fans also can gain admission by bringing their ticket stub from the Saturday's (Sept. 7) Michigan vs. Army football game.
Team Notes
• Through two matches, U-M has outshot opponents, 28-13, and own a 13-1 edge in corner kicks. Half of Michigan's shots have been on-goal.
• Michigan has six goals through its first two matches for the first time since 2013. That year, U-M beat Loyola-Chicago, 5-2, and played to a 1-1 draw against Bowling Green.
• Nine student-athletes already have recorded at least one point. Sophomore Derick Broche and graduate student Nebojsa Popovic have five points (two goals, assist). In the team's 3-1 win over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Monday (Sept. 2), Broche made his first career start, scored twice and notched an assist on Popovic's game-winning goal.
• Freshmen Carter Payne, Harry Pithers and Christian Pulselli made their collegiate debuts vs. Florida Gulf Coast last Friday (Aug. 30). Payne has started both matches on defense.
• Senior Andrew Verdi started both matches in net for the Wolverines and made three saves. It was his first action since 2017.
Opponent Preview
Cornell (0-0) has yet to play in 2019. The Big Red were picked to finish third in the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll behind Princeton and Dartmouth. Junior Charles Touche led the team in scoring in 2018 (8G, 2A) and was an All-Ivy League (first team) selection. Sophomore Emeka Eneli was the 2018 Ivy League Rookie of the Year after posting seven goals and two assists. Tate Keir was an All-Ivy League (second team) choice.
Series: This will be the first-ever meeting between Michigan and Cornell.
Washington (2-0) is ranked No. 13 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll after it scored wins over Denver (2-1) and San Francisco (4-0) last week. The Huskies were picked to finish second in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll and Blake Bodily, Dylan Teves and Ethan Bartlow earned preseason All-Pac 12 honors. Bodily (named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List) and Gio Miglietti each have five points on the season (2G, 1A).
Series: This will be the second meeting between Michigan and Washington. The teams met on Sept. 19, 2003, a 3-2 Washington win.
