PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team sacrificed a two-goal lead in regulation and again in the shootout to fall, 3-2, to No. 21 Stanford on Friday evening (Sept. 6) at Varsity Field Hockey Turf. It was the Wolverines' first shootout since the format replaced penalty strokes in 2012.
After Stanford missed its first three shootout attempts, the Wolverines had three straight opportunities to put the game away but hit the post, missed wide and put the ball into the cage after time expired to force another attempt. Michigan went first and missed, and the Cardinal did not as Corinne Zanolli knocked in her rebound off sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker for her third and the game-winning goal.
Spieker was outstanding in the contest, earning a pair of clutch overtime saves to force the shootout -- including a penalty stroke off Zanolli at the 67:16 in the first overtime. The Wolverine goalkeeper also charged out and stopped Zanolli in the second overtime after the Cardinal got behind the defense for the second time in a narrow window. Stanford had scored on the former opportunity, but the goal was quickly waived off due to a back stick.
Michigan scored late in the first half and early in the second to take a two-goal lead. Sophomore Kathryn Peterson, playing in her home state for the first time in college, banged in a one-timed tip from the left post at the 29:00 mark. Freshman Sarah Pyrtek pushed the ball across the circle, it deflected off sophomore Sofia Southam in front and right to Peterson, who lifted it high from the back post. It was her second of the season.
The Wolverines' second goal, at 31:24, resembled the first, with junior/sophomore Emma Tamer hammering a hard ball into the circle from the right side. Junior/sophomore Kate Burney got her stick on it and it kicked loose on the left side, where sophomore Tina D'Anjolell laid out to knock it into the open cage.
Stanford's Zanolli responded with two quick goals, scoring at 33:00 and 38:20 to even the score -- the former on the Cardinal's first and only corner opportunity of the contest and the latter on a hard windup from the center after getting free in the circle.
Michigan dominated the statistical categories, outshooting the Cardinal, 20-6, and outcornering them, 5-1. Spieker made two saves for the Wolverines -- both in overtime -- while Stanford's All-America goalkeeper Kelsey Bing earned 12 stops.
The Wolverines (1-2) will wrap up their west-coast swing on Sunday (Sept. 8) with a noon PDT slate against California at the Golden Bears' Underhill Field in Berkeley, California. The non-conference slate will be streamed live via Pac-12.com.
