CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened up its 2020 season with a victory in the 50th Windy City Invitational, winning the meet with a 400.000 team score ahead of five other teams -- Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Northern Illinois and host Illinois-Chicago -- on Saturday (Jan. 18) at Credit Union 1 Arena. Junior Cameron Bock placed second in the all-around competition with a score of 83.150.
The Wolverines won four events as a team in pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Bock won both pommel horse and vault while also placing second on floor exercise and parallel bars. Junior Jonathan Liu also won his first event title with a 13.75 on high bar.
Michigan (5-0) began the night on vault, marking a team total of 70.700. Bock led the U-M contingent with a career-high 14.75, while classmate Nick Guy registered a 14.45 as U-M sat in first place after one rotation.
On the Wolverines' second rotation, parallel bars, Bock led U-M with a 14.10, while senior Mitchell Brown scored a 13.60. Michigan totaled a 66.750 to compile a running score of 137.45. After two rotations, Michigan trailed Illinois by 1.55 points.
On high bar in the third rotation, the Wolverines stuck four of six routines en route to a 66.700 team total. Junior Jonathan Liu marked a career high with a 13.75, and freshman Paul Juda chipped in a 13.60. U-M recaptured the lead by a 1.65 margin over Illinois with a running total of 204.15.
After a 65.350 on floor exercise that saw U-M increase its lead to 2.1 points over second-place Minnesota, the Wolverines took to pommel horse in the fifth rotation. On pommel horse, U-M put together a score of 64.90, led by a stellar set from Bock, who marked a 14.00. Heading into the final rotation, U-M led Minnesota by 1.6 points with the Gophers on floor exercise and U-M on still rings.
U-M closed out the victory with a 65.600 on rings, with Bock marking a 13.30, followed by Juda (13.25). A team mark of 400.000 was enough to hold off Minnesota's 398.750.
Five freshmen made their U-M debuts on the night in Juda, David Willett, Adam Wooten, Markus Shears and Casey Cummings. Junior Alan Gerdov (high bar, floor exercise) and sophomore Casey Wentland (still rings) also made their Michigan debuts.
