LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened up a weekend of limited competition at the Kentucky Rod McCravy Memorial on Friday (Jan. 24), headlined by another strong performance by the weight throw duo of Briana Nelson and Courtney Jacobsen at Nutter Field House.
Nelson tied her career best and Jacobsen turned in a solid series as the pair finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in a deep field of throwers.
A fourth-round heave of 20.05m (65 feet, 9.25 inches) was the crowning throw of what was the best six-throw series of Nelson's career. All six of her attempts measured farther than 19 meters, with five exceeding 19.85 meters.
Jacobsen needed a clutch third-round throw of 19.53m (64-1) -- incidentally, the school record from last year that she and Nelson have combined to exceed 22 times in 36 total attempts -- to stave off an early exit from the competition.
She would stretch her best of the day to 19.80m (64-11.5) on her final attempt.
In the only other action for the Wolverines on the day, Madison Eaton just missed advancing to the 60-meter hurdles semifinals as she finished 19th in the preliminaries in a career-best 8.76. Paige Chapman was 27th in 9.01.
Action at Kentucky continues Saturday morning at starting at 11 a.m.
