LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team's first road trip of the 2020 indoor season came to a close Saturday (Jan. 25) with the final day of the Kentucky Rod McCravy Memorial at the Nutter Field House.
Amanda Schaare was the headliner for the Wolverines, finishing fifth overall and tying both her personal and Michigan freshman shot put records in the process.
Schaare only managed to land two legal throws on the day, but she made both of them count. Facing a third-and-final attempt in the trials without a mark on the board, she went 14.93m (48 feet, 11.75 inches) to not just stay alive for three more throws in the final but also move up into sixth place.
Twice more she fouled before unleashing a 15.66m (51-4.5) on her sixth-and-final attempt to ultimately move up to fifth.
On the track, Julia Vanitvelt led a small Michigan contingent in the mile, placing fifth overall in 4:54.95.
The Wolverines will return to the confines of the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building next weekend as they host the two-day Power Five Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 31-Feb. 1). Expected to compete against Michigan are Louisville, Michigan State, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
