
U-M Swimmers Win Orange Bowl Classic; Divers Perform Well at Coral Springs Invite

The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team concluded its annual training trip with a pair of competitions in south Florida on Friday (Jan. 3). The swimmers claimed first place (288 points) at the Orange Bowl Classic at the Jacobs Aquatic Center in Key Largo, while the divers took on Penn State at the Coral Springs Invitational at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

KEY LARGO, Fla. -- The Wolverines won all 12 events in the short-course, 25-meter pool. Sophomore Maggie MacNeil showed her speed in setting two meet records, winning the 50-meter butterfly (26.21) and the 50-meter backstroke (27.06). Senior Miranda Tucker also won a pair of events, sweeping the 50-meter breaststroke (31.63) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:09.38).
Making her Michigan debut on Friday was sophomore Olivia Carter, who promptly set a meet record in the 100-meter butterfly (1:00.62). Carter spent last year at the University of Georgia where she was an All-American in the 200-meter butterfly and was named 2019 SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Year.
Junior and Florida native Claire Maiocco raced to the wall in the 50-meter freestyle (26.62), out-touching teammate Daria Pyshnenko by one-tenth of a second. Earlier in the meet, Pyshnenko won the 100-meter freestyle (57.67), tallying the only sub-30 split of the entire field on the back half of the race.
The other close race came in the 200-meter IM, where sophomore Victoria Kwan got to the wall just ahead of Carter (2:17.44). Other individual victors included freshmen Mariella Venter in the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.20) and Kaitlynn Sims, who led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 400-meter freestyle (4:15.81).
The Wolverines also claimed both relays. The foursome of MacNeil, Tucker, Carter and Pyshnenko won the 200-meter medley relay (1:53.01), while freshmen Katii Tang, Sophia Kudryashova, Megan Glass and senior Chloe Hicks combined to take the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:46.85).
Coral Springs Invitational
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- The diving squads from Michigan and Penn State squared off at the Coral Springs Invitational. Each diver performed on two of the three events.
Three different Wolverines won events, as freshman Lauren Cheetham and sophomore Allie Klein alternated 1-2 finishes on the springboard events. Cheetham won on one-meter (289.95) and took second on three-meter (322.43), while Klein won three-meter (334.43) and took second on one-meter (282.23). Junior Christy Cutshaw was the other winner, taking the top spot on platform (288.53).
Overall, U-M went 1-2-4-5 on one-meter, 1-2-3-4 on three-meter and 1-2-3 on platform.
Michigan will return to Canham Natatorium on Saturday, Jan. 11, when it hosts defending Big Ten champions Indiana for a dual meet. The competition will begin at 11 a.m., and admission is free.
