ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team struggled to win several swing matches in its return to the competition mat in the new year, falling to Oregon State, 21-15, in the fifth annual Joe Wells Classic on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 5) at Cliff Keen Arena. Four of the Wolverines' six losses were decided by three points or fewer, while a U-M forfeit at 133 pounds provided the Beavers their only bonus points.
For their part, the Wolverines claimed major decisions in three matches, including an 11-0 win for junior/sophomore Jack Medley in the opening bout at 125 pounds. Medley scored two takedowns, a reversal and four near-fall points in his dominant win against Brandon Kaylor, breaking the bout open with a four-point arm bar in the second period. He iced the bout with a takedown and rideout in the third, accumulating 2:18 in riding-time advantage.
Sophomore/freshman Max Maylor and sophomore Mason Parris also earned bonus points at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Maylor finished on five takedowns en route to a 12-3 major decision against Jackson McKinney, finishing on two single legs and a double to build a sizable early lead in the first period. He finished with 4:34 in riding-time advantage.
Parris rolled to a 15-5 major decision against Jamarcus Grant in the dual's final bout at heavyweight, scoring four takedowns, a reversal and two back points for his ninth bonus win of the season. Parris went feet-to-back for four points on a carry in the first 30 seconds of the bout before adding three points on leg attacks -- one apiece in each frame -- and rode for 4:36. Parris improved to 16-0 on the season.
Sophomore/freshman Will Lewan, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, earned an 11-5 decision over Logan Meek with four takedowns and 2:34 riding-time advantage. Lewan just missed out on a bonus point of his own after giving up a third-period takedown, but recovered, finishing the match with a late go-behind and rideout to ice the win.
Oregon State took the lead for good with the six-point forfeit before rallying from initial deficits in decision wins at 141, 149 and 165 pounds to pull away. The Beavers clinched the team win with a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds. Fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow spent nearly the entire third period in deep on a pair of single-leg shots but could not finish to even the score.
The Wolverines will kick off Big Ten Conference action at home next Friday (Jan. 10) when they host in-state rival Michigan State at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
