Wolverine Bites
• Friday's dual will mark the 112th meeting between in-state rivals Michigan and Michigan State, dating back to the Wolverines' inaugural 1921-22 season -- when MSU was the Michigan Agricultural College. The two programs split a pair of duals that season with the Spartans winning, 20-18, before U-M bounced back with an 18-15 decision. Michigan owns a 71-35-5 advantage in the all-time series with Michigan State and has claimed each of the last eight meetings.
• Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris remains unbeaten on the season with a 16-0 record, including eight wins over nationally-ranked opponents and nine bonus wins -- with four pins -- and is ranked as high as No. 3 in the national polls. Parris defeated Arizona State's sixth-ranked Tanner Hall, 6-3, in the finals at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 6-7) with two takedowns and 1:03 riding-time advantage. He also owns three wins over Central Michigan's now-fifth-ranked Matt Stencel, including 9-2 and 4-0 decisions in the finals at the MSU Open (Nov. 2) and Black Knight Invite (Nov. 17).
• Senior/junior Kanen Storr came out of his Olympic redshirt at the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), where he took seventh place at 149 pounds with a 6-2 record, including Big Ten wins over Purdue's Nate Limmex (8-1) and Wisconsin's Cole Martin (6-3). Storr, who was an NCAA qualifier last season at 141 pounds, is ranked as ninth in the national rankings at 149. Storr previously took runner-up honors, while competing unattached, at the MSU Open (Nov. 2). He is 10-3 on the season.
• Freshman Cole Mattin also came out of redshirt last semester, earning a dramatic 11-8 comeback win against Central Michigan's Dresden Simon at 141 pounds (Nov. 24). Mattin overcame essentially a five-point deficit -- 5-1 plus riding time -- with a feet-to-back single leg for six points midway through the third period. Mattin was one match away from matching at the CKLV tournament. He is ranked No. 24 by TrackWrestling.
• Sophomore Jack Medley earned a ranked win at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a 6-5 decision against North Carolina State's 15th-ranked Jakob Camacho behind a late reversal and rideout. He also earned his second win of the season against three-time NCAA qualifier Christian Moody of Oklahoma at the CKLV, using three takedowns, a reversal and 3:08 riding time to win 9-4.
• Sophomore/freshman Will Lewan, who defaulted out of the CKLV tournament with injury, captured the Black Knight Invite title at 157 pounds with a 3-0 record and a 5-2 decision against Army's Luke Weiland in the championship bout behind a pair of third-period takedowns. It was his second collegiate tournament title and his second top-three finish this season. Lewan is 10-3 on the year and is ranked as high as No. 9 nationally.
• Three Wolverines are currently taking Olympic redshirts for the 2019-20 season -- fifth-year seniors Myles Amine and Logan Massa and graduate student Stevan Micic. Micic and Amine have already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after placing fifth at 57kg/125 pounds and 86kg/189 pounds, respectively, at the UWW World Championships in September. Massa qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials with his first-place finish at the Senior Nationals in December. None of the three are enrolled in classes this semester and will retain the year of NCAA eligibility through the athletics activity waiver.

Scouting the Opposition
Michigan State: The Spartans are 4-2 on the season, most recently splitting their four duals at the South Beach Duals (Dec. 29-30) -- with wins against Duke (44-0) and Wyoming (18-12) and losses to Cornell (20-16) and South Dakota State (19-17). Michigan State owns one nationally-ranked wrestler in the latest InterMat poll -- No. 18 Jake Tucker at 157 pounds. Michigan owns a 71-35-5 advantage in the all-time series against Michigan State and has won each of the last eight meetings, including a 30-10 decision last season in East Lansing.
Last Time Out
The Wolverines dropped a 21-15 decision to Oregon State last Sunday (Jan. 5) in the fifth annual Joe Wells Classic and their first competition of the New Year. Michigan won four matches, earning major decisions from junior/sophomore Jack Medley (125 pounds), sophomore/freshman Max Maylor (174) and sophomore Mason Parris (Hwt), but could not hang on in several closely-contested swing matches. Four of Michigan's six losses were decided by three points or fewer. [ Full Recap ]
