ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Paul Juda of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team has been selected to participate in an Olympic test event, "Friendship and Solidarity Competition," on Sunday, Nov. 8, in Tokyo, Japan, the site of the 2021 Olympic Games. The event, organized by the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) and the Japanese Gymnastics Association, will be held at Yoyogi 1st National Gymnasium.
Juda will be one of three team members representing the United States, along with current Minnesota standout Shane Wiskus and former Oklahoma Sooner Yul Moldauer. The American trio will compete against teams from China, Russia and Japan.
Per USA Gymnastics, all participants will follow strict medical guidelines based on those that were approved in September by the International Gymnastics Federation's Executive Committee and reviewed by the USA Gymnastics medical staff. Safety protocols, such as regular COVID-19 testing and private travel and lodging accommodations, are intended to create a "bubble" atmosphere for participating athletes.
Each team (Team Friendship, Team Solidarity) will be made up of eight female and eight male gymnasts from the pool of available athletes from the four competing countries. The teams' composition is balanced in gender as well as in national representation. All gymnasts can compete on all apparatus, but only the top three scores on each apparatus will count toward the overall team score. All-around and individual apparatus competitions will not be held in conjunction with this event.
Juda will be the second Wolverine in recent memory to participate in such an event. Sam Mikulak competed in the 2012 test event held at O2 Arena in London, England, prior to the 2012 Olympic games.
