ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team picked up a pair of event wins and numerous top finishes as it closed out competition at the Power Five Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 1).
In front of a near-capacity crowd at the world-class, 2,000-plus spectator U-M Indoor Track Building, Andrew Liskowitz took down a rival national title contender in the shot put, while the trio of Job Mayhue, Roland Amarteifio and Sierra Hendrix-Williams swept the top three spots in the 60-meter hurdles.
Their finishes were among 20 different top-five efforts for the Wolverines on the weekend as the team begins its drive toward the Big Ten Championships later this month. Also among that group was a historic run over 800 meters for Anthony Berry, who surpassed some very impressive names in the record books with his runner-up finish.
As dominant as Liskowitz was in his 2020 season opener two weekends ago, his effort on Saturday was more a demonstration in veteran poise. Trailing national No. 3 Daniel McArthur of North Carolina heading into the penultimate fifth round, Liskowitz heaved his best of the day -- 19.76m (64 feet, 10 inches) -- to take the lead.
McArthur was unable to respond, finishing with a pair of fouls, while Liskowitz added a 19.64m (64-5.25) final attempt for good measure. Teammate John Meyer was third with a best of 17.97m (58-11.5).
Earlier in the day, fellow national No. 4-ranked weight thrower Manning Plater was first among collegians and second overall in his signature event. The junior tossed a best of 20.65m (67-9) to finish behind only former U-M great Joe Ellis.
While Liskowitz and Meyer went 1-3, the national-caliber 60-meter hurdles crew did them one better and went 1-2-3 in their event. Mayhue ran his best time of the season and the second-best of his career in 8.00, with Amarteifio just behind him at 8.02. Hendrix-Williams completed the top trio with a third-place 8.17 run.
Perhaps the most impressive performance on the track for Michigan came in a runner-up finish for mid-distance runner Berry. One week after clocking a big career-best 4:01.77 in the mile at Boston, Berry returned to Ann Arbor for what would be a career-best at 800 meters in 1:50.19.
The performance was an improvement on his best by nearly a second, and it vaulted him up to No. 6 in school history -- just ahead of two-time Olympic medalist Nick Willis. Berry's time ranks 19th in the nation for the 2020 indoor season.
Berry was not the only entrant into the Michigan history books. Two freshmen making their career debuts in the heptathlon -- Mason Mahacek and Heath Baldwin -- ultimately ended up surpassing the previous freshman school record in the seven-event competition.
Mahacek, on the strength of the field's top performances in the pole vault (4.75m / 15-7) and at 1,000 meters (2:42.26) on day two, scored 5,242 points to finish runner-up in the competition. Baldwin was not far behind with 5,171 points for third.
Both men far exceeded the previous freshman record of 4,847 points set by Ryan Stevenson in 2000.
A contingent of Wolverines will be back in action next week at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7-8) in South Bend, Indiana.
