ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With just three more weekends of competition remaining ahead of the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the University of Michigan men's track and field team will send a contingent of Wolverines to compete on Notre Dame's oversized track on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7-8) at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
Led by Josh Zeller, Roland Amarteifio and Sierra Hendrix-Williams from one of the nation's deepest hurdles corps, select sprinters, distance runners and jumpers will compete in what is annually one of the Midwest's most prominent meets.
For many of the 20 men in the travel party, this will be their first competition of 2020 on the type of oversized, flat track that will host Big Tens on Feb. 28-29 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Notre Dame's track measures a fifth of a mile -- just shy of 322 meters -- with flat turns, compared to the banked 200-meter track housed within the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building.
Michigan's entries kick off Friday at 4:50 p.m. during an evening track program with several prelims and several finals. Saturday's track events begin with a program featuring qualifying rounds and lower-seeded sections at 9:55 a.m. Top-seeded finals on the track will take place during a 2-4 p.m. broadcast window on the digital ACC Network Extra streaming platform.
Zeller, Amarteifio and Hendrix-Williams will have as many as three chances to represent the nation's sixth-ranked 60-meter hurdles group, per the USTFCCCA rankings. The true freshman Zeller will have the opportunity to add to his five sub-eight-second performances to begin his U-M career, while Amarteifio and Hendrix-Williams will look to dip below that threshold for the first time this winter.
They will race the preliminaries on Friday at 4:50 p.m. with the hope of advancing through to Saturday's 9:55 a.m. semifinals and 2:10 p.m. final.
All-American relay runners Ian Davis and Vail Hartman will run the 400 meters on Saturday as they continue to tune up for a reprise of their 2019 relay success and individual breakthroughs. Big Ten Indoor scorer Asani Hampton will also race in his signature indoor 60-meter event.
The distance crew will feature the likes of Big Ten Indoor Championships mile scorer Ben Hill and Cole Johnson at 800 meters, as well as the official 2020 in-uniform debut of 2019 Big Ten Indoor scorer Will Landowne in the mile. Running unattached last weekend, Landowne posted an impressive 8:05.66 performance over 3,000 meters.
Hill and Johnson will have a chance to bolster Michigan's sixth-ranked 800-meter crew -- both are already considered in that rank -- while Landowne could push Michigan up in the rankings from No. 6 in the mile with his 2020 debut in the event.
Big Ten scorer Daniel Butael and Eric Harris will represent the Wolverines in the field in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively.
Wolverine Bites
• The Wolverines, led by head coaches Jerry Clayton and James Henry, moved up to No. 28 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason National Track and Field Rating Index (TFRI) that was released Monday (Feb. 3).
• The Wolverines finished eighth at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships, scoring 52 points. With defending shot put champion Andrew Liskowitz leading nine more returning individual scorers from a year ago, the Wolverines put 34 of those points back on the board in 2020. The Wolverines' relay teams -- 4x400 and distance medley -- also scored seven points, with the 4x4 squad having earned outdoor second team All-America honors since last winter. Both teams return three of four members from their 2019 Big Ten roster, with many additional parts to fill the voids.
• Returning All-Americans: Liskowitz (indoor and outdoor shot put); the quartet of Desmond Melson, Ian Davis, Alex Schwedt and Vail Hartman (outdoor 4x400 relay); Jack Aho and Devin Meyrer (cross country)
• Returning Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers: Aho (3,000 meters); Roland Amarteifio (60-meter hurdles); Anthony Berry (800 meters); Daniel Butael (triple jump); Asani Hampton (60 meters); Sierra Hendrix-Williams (60-meter hurdles); Ben Hill (mile); Will Landowne (3,000 meters); Liskowitz (shot put champion); and Job Mayhue (60-meter hurdles)
• Current school record-holders: Liskowitz (indoor and outdoor shot put)
