Wolverine Bites
• Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris owns a perfect 23-0 record this season and has earned bonus points in 15 matches -- 65 percent of his appearances. He has earned bonus points in six of seven Big Ten duals, with three straight pins to open the conference slate and two over his last two appearances. He boasts nine total pins on the season. Parris led the Wolverines last season with 32 wins and 13 falls.
• Parris earned Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week honors on Tuesday (Feb. 11) after pinning Iowa's No. 3-ranked Tony Cassioppi at the 4:31 mark last Saturday (Feb. 8). Parris earned three takedowns in the bout, including two in the first period, and was holding four back points at the time of the fall.
• Parris owns nine wins over nationally-ranked opponents this season, though missing out on his matchup with Minnesota's No. 1 Gable Steveson on Jan. 19. He defeated Arizona State's sixth-ranked Tanner Hall, 6-3, in the finals at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 6-7) with two takedowns and 1:03 riding-time advantage. He also owns three wins over Central Michigan's now-fourth-ranked Matt Stencel, including 9-2 and 4-0 decisions in the finals at the MSU Open (Nov. 2) and Black Knight Invite (Nov. 17), and a 14-3 major decision over Pittsburgh's No. 8 Demetrius Thomas at the MSU Open.
• Sophomore/freshman Joey Silva was also victorious against Iowa, using two takedowns and 1:19 riding-time advantage to defeat Paul Glynn, 7-5, and improve to 4-0 on the season at 133 pounds. Silva made his season and varsity debut in a 7-2 decision against Michigan State's Garrett Pepple (Jan. 10) and also clinched the Wolverines' dual win over No. 11 Minnesota with an 11-3 major decision over Brent Jones in the final bout. He posted a 7-1 record in his redshirt season last year, earning a tournament win at the Cleveland State Open in his first collegiate competition.
• The Wolverines are 5-2 in Big Ten dual-meet competition and own ranked wins over No. 11 Minnesota (22-15, Jan. 19), No. 15 Northwestern (20-17, Jan. 24) and No. 23 Rutgers (21-16, Feb. 1). Michigan has posted a 20-5 record in Big Ten duals over the last three seasons, including an 8-1 mark last year. U-M has finished third in the regular-season standings in each of the last two seasons.
• Though dropping his most recent match to Iowa's No. 1 Spencer Lee by an 8-1 margin, junior/sophomore Jack Medley became the first wrestler to avoid bonus points against the two-time NCAA champion this season and just the second to reach the third period. Medley owns four wins over ranked opponents at 125 pounds this season, including in two over his last four matches. He used a third-period ride to edge Rutgers' No. 16 Nicolas Aguilar (Feb. 1) and, a week earlier, clinched Michigan's dual win at Northwestern with a 3-2 decision over No. 6 Michael DeAugustino in the final match. Medley previously lost to DeAugustino, 12-5, in the quarterfinals at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 6-7).
• Senior/junior Kanen Storr suffered his first dual loss of the season in a 2-1 decision to Iowa's No. 2-ranked Pat Lugo. Storr is now 6-1 in duals, with bonus wins in three of his last four appearances, including a 17-1 technical fall against Rutgers. Storr, who is 13-2 and ranked as high as No. 9 nationally, came out of his Olympic redshirt at the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), where he took seventh place with Big Ten wins over Purdue's Nate Limmex (8-1) and Wisconsin's Cole Martin (6-3). Storr is up a weight class this season; he was an NCAA qualifier last year at 141 pounds.
• In addition to Silva, seven other Wolverines have made their collegiate dual-meet debuts this season -- freshman Cole Mattin (141 pounds), senior/junior Ben Freeman (141), sophomore/freshman Nick Freeman (149), sophomore/freshman Will Lewan (157), senior/junior Tyler Meisinger (165), sophomore/freshman Max Maylor (174) and sophomore/freshman Bobby Striggow (184).
• Three Wolverines are taking Olympic redshirts for the 2019-20 season -- fifth-year seniors Myles Amine and Logan Massa, and graduate student Stevan Micic. Micic and Amine already have qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after placing fifth at 57kg/125 pounds and 86kg/189 pounds, respectively, at the UWW World Championships in September. Massa qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials with his first-place finish at the Senior Nationals in December. None of the three are enrolled in classes this semester and will retain the year of NCAA eligibility through the athletics activity waiver.
